ORIENTAL DANCE with PROFª FLOR COELHO

april 22nd
10am – 12h30am
Cineteatro António Lamoso Rehearsal Room

As a complement to our 2017 programme where audience has the possibility to see contemporary dance, in these moments, the spectator will have the possibility to experience dance, its strategies and ways of using.
This is a cycle of experiential encounters of a particular dance technique or practice once a month for a total of 8 months over the year.

These gatherings are not classes or workshops, but spaces for playful and independent experiences that seek to build an audience and give you tools to feel closer to a dance show.
At a time that is built more as a meeting than a workshop and where there is no requirement for continuous attendance from one meeting to another, participants will encounter different choreographers to experience, rather than learn, a different dance in each encounter widening their understanding of what dance can be.

This program of encounters for all ages seeks to promote the construction of a community place for experimentation and understanding dance. More than a theoretical support for the spectacles we propose, such as the usual post-show talks, we propose here a cycle of accessible experiences that bring the spectator closer to the bodies he habitually sees.
All these activities are open to all ages, enhancing the contamination of interest and curiosity for dance and inviting the spectators to bring with them other friends or relatives spreading their curiosity about dance and widening our audience.

Flor is a dancer, choreographer and teacher of Oriental Dance, working and living in Porto. She began her dance studies at the age of 9 with the practice of Classical Ballet, having completed the "Major Examinations", by ISTD - Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing. Her first contact with Oriental Dance was in 2002, having undergone intensive training with reference teachers in the area, covering its different aspects - classical / modern, traditional and fusion oriental dance; music / arabic percussion. She founded in 2010, in Porto, the Bellystudio - Art, Expression and Development, of which she is artistic and pedagogical director. In 2014, she created the group Azure - Experimental Oriental Dance Group, and that same year, won the 1st place, with the group choreography "Oriental Vibes", at the "Dance in Galicia" Festival held in Vigo.

SOBRE A CURADORIA 2017 - ROGÉRIO NUNO COSTA ENTREVISTA DINIS MACHADO | Parte I de VI . Abril 2017

CURADORIA BCN 2017
Um diálogo virtual entre Rogério Nuno Costa e Dinis Machado

Abril 2017 (Parte I de V)

Curatorship BCN 2017
A virtual dialogue between Rogério Nuno Costa and Dinis Machado

April 2017 (Part I of V)

01.03.2017, Rogério Nuno Costa

Hello Dinis,
This year Ballet Contemporâneo do Norte begins a new configuration in its program and in its action, inviting artists with whom it has collaborated in the last years to assume the artistic direction of the company during a year. In 2017 you will be the artist responsible for the design of the company's core program, embracing what we like to call "curatorship", a terminology that may be closer to the reality of the visual arts. I would like to start with you an assumedly fragmented and durable dialogue, inspired by the proposals that will be presented at the speed of writing and virtuality that separates us geographically (I in Helsinki, you in Stockholm, BCN in Portugal), revealing not only the ideas that underpin your curatorial action, but also the importance of this gesture for the inauguration of a new critical eye on BCNs and its role as a contemporary dance company. To begin with (or before we begin), there is nothing better than to reflect precisely on what it means to "curate" the broad field of performing arts, or what it means to be a healer of ephemerality. Let me say the word, hoping that in the next questions/interrogations we will dig deeper into what will be the 2017 program for Ballet Contemporâneo do Norte.

See you soon.

10.03.2017, Dinis Machado

Hello Rogério,
Although the ephemeral condition of any performative work is obvious, and therefore of the program I drew for this year, it seems to me important to question whether this ephemeral condition is not similar to that of any other artistic object that has to be actuated in order to create an attention or, if we want, a kind of hypervisibility, that makes it a dramaturgical and interpretable object for the viewer. It seems to me that from the moment dance is formalized in a show, in an object, its ephemeral condition also becomes questionable. This object is also reactivable, revisable, and decomposes, losing its contemporary vitality and becoming the patrimonial mark of a search, of obstinacy, of a past questioning. My feeling about seeing Duchamp's "bottle rack" is not much different from the feeling of seeing the reconstitution of Anna Halprin's Parades and Changes: a mixture of adoration and nausea of departures that our inevitable nostalgia and adoration for history can bring us to.
I am interested in the processes, the obsessions, the researches, the practices and the meetings in the Art, and in particular in dance. And I am also interested in how the objects that derive from them can be transparent to these dynamics, to these vitalities. I am interested in the fragility of sufficient objectivity that sustains these dynamics, while letting them show. An object too object becomes opaque on the dynamics that originated it, leaving no more than its formality. Similarly, an object that isn't yet is not enough to give visibility to the process that originated it.
I would like this curatorship to be full of processes, obsessions, researches, practices and meetings, between artists and with different publics and contexts. I invited artists who work on this tangible objectivity, which reconnects the object or image with the vitality of a continuous discourse and practice.
Hug,

Dinis

27.03.2017, Rogério Nuno Costa

That is, this transparent objectivity you refer to will not necessarily have to do with an insistence on the overly trivial figure of "work-in-progress" (some say that this figure serves only any exculpation of the artist who "does not want to finish what initiated "), but rather the revelation of a continuous and procedural temporality. How will this materialize? How do you share fragile vitalities with the public, in which formats or configurations (of spectacle and not only)? ...

30.03.2017, Dinis Machado

It seems to me that you are raising an issue that is very dear to me and that has to do with the space of coincidence and dissidence between things and names. From a queer perspective, I would say that it interests me to claim the words man and woman for me, not to rekindle all the expectations, codes, protocols, and hierarchies associated with them, but to melt, rethink, remix ... That is, that a man or a woman can be, and not reiterate a calcified gender idea around each of these roles. Reconsider, too, who can claim those titles. Likewise, I am interested in the same kind of questioning at the level of the identity of an institution, demanding all formats (show, work-in-progress, workshop, company, choreographer, dancer), then ask ourselves, and try, what they can be, thus expanding the frontiers of their possibilities. To experience a place that is not a space of rupture, but of reformulation. It seems to me too easy to be against the institution, to be the antagonist. I am interested in being part of the institutions and working with them in their progressive reformulation and in their possibilities, assuming the shared responsibility and risk of this process.
In 2009, I decided to study at the Maumaus Visual Arts School in Lisbon because I was very intrigued about what the idea of an atelier, as it is understood in the plastic arts, could be, applied to the universe of performing arts. I have this notion, perhaps idealized, that the studio in the visual arts is a space where an artist occupies himself over time with a continuous practice, from where objects emerge, as opposed to the studio in the performing arts, which is much more often A space where you go for a limited period of time with an approved project, which takes place. I've wanted to be able to try out what it might be to go to the studio with a view to letting the subject happen instead of going to the studio to do the thing.
That is what I also want for this BCN program. There is clearly here a willingness to abandon the rhetorical pre-definition of an artistic object that illustrates an idea, instead of finding processes that discover the object, embracing its materiality. However, I have tremendous respect for any public moment. I remember that when I started working (in the late 1990s, early 2000s) work-in-progress was done for everything and nothing, often with very little consistency. I believe that when an audience is called, we have to be sure that what we present has relevance to this other, not serving only a protocolary or institutional purpose. This applies to both work-in-progress and spectacle situations: the questioning and active energy of the processes behind the proposals must be maintained and maintained so that they do not become a repetition of an empty exercise. For this, it seems fundamental to me to work and to feed what is before the production of the show. And it is in this sense that it seems to me that there is as much potential in the idea of company as in the interstitial space where this questioning (and practice) takes place: what can be a dancer, what can be dance, what can be an institution. These questions and trials are something that occupies me a lot also in my practice as a freelancer, but in an area without name, improvised between productions of shows.

31.03.2017, Rogério Nuno Costa

That is, this constant experimentation that materializes among the forms (and formulas) of producing speeches will assist not only the "curatorial" program that you designed for this year, but also, and in a more subliminal sense, the very notion of contemporary dance company, which BCN also wishes experimentally to reformulate and rethink.
In order to conclude this first part of our dialogue, can you give me some examples of what we will be able to see in the next 3 months of programming and that can, in a way, illustrate your programmatic thinking?

31.03.2017, Dinis Machado

The celebration of the process of performance in the performing arts in the 1990s and 2000s, at the same time as the dance structures lost importance in order to give place to the figure of the individual choreographer and his celebration as a super star, gave rise to an infinite production of spectacles Which were constructed one from the modernist reiteration of the very gesture of building a show. But at the same time, and following the liberal advent of the moment, everything that was "between" the construction of shows was considered dispensable. The company as a thing (collective) in itself, and all the research inherent, plus the morning class, repertory essay, etc., were dispensed with; Worse: they were considered autonomous responsibility of the dancer, again following the principles of liberal freelancer. What I propose for this program is to "separate", again, the institution, the spectacle, the dance and the choreography. That is, to understand the company as a place where multiple processes and authors intersect, instead of promoting a single line of drama that is that of the choreographer.
It seems to me increasingly evident that the way in which a choreography is danced carries its own dramaturgy that coexists with the dramaturgy that the choreographer structured. The same can be said in relation to the dramaturgy of the drawing that crosses the schedule of a company, as well as to the dramaturgy of a spectacle. Thus, every time the company meets the public, there are several lines of drama that intersect, complete and inter-question. I do not think they have to converge; I would like to celebrate a certain plurality, perhaps postmodern ... I would like the public not to applaud a total work of art, but that could be lost in the dialogue between what one dances, one dances, one dances, and so on. ..
In this sense, and until the summer, the company will reinforce precisely what is not the production of new creations. Let's start a monthly atelier with the public of Santa Maria da Feira called "One Dance Per Month" because dance is to see, but also to experience, and the way we experience it in our life is fundamental to the way we look at it in an artistic context. We will also practice and circulate the works created in the last biennium by the company. And, very importantly, we will rethink a lesson that will be practiced and re-structured throughout the year by the dancers who will be part of BCN this year.
So the first paragraph of the question "What can be a dance company?" Will be "What can be a daily lesson in the preparation of a dance company?". We'll start at the base! :)

(Part II of V will leave with the newsletter of June 2017.)
