UNIVERSIDADE | YLIOPISTO é um projeto duracional para a criação de uma universidade virtual, trans-nacional e trans-artística. Uma escola para ensinar a anular a arte através da Arte (ou vice-versa). Um laboratório de experiências Pop. Uma masterclass intitulada "A preguiça como novo avant-garde". Um workshop intensivo de Kopimismo. Um magazine cooltural. O projeto UNIVERSIDADE propõe a construção de uma plataforma colaborativa de pensamento interdisciplinar ao longo de 5 anos “lectivos”, operando, virtual e fisicamente, entre dois extremos da Europa: Portugal e Finlândia. Grupos de trabalho fluidos (e nómadas) encontrar-se-ão em espaços temporários com o objetivo de elaborar uma proposta híbrida de ensino artístico alicerçado em metodologias “não-artísticas”: como chegar à Arte sem ser através da arte? Uma universidade meta-referencial que oferece um só programa — o dos “estudos universitários” —, num diálogo rizomático e taxonómico entre todas as Artes e todas as Ciências, e num sistema discursivo não-hierárquico e pós-capitalista. Para tal, ensaiar-se-ão novos paradigmas educacionais, experimentar-se-ão novos modos de subjetivação e de partilha de conhecimento, antever-se-ão novos modelos éticos (logo, estéticos) na relação “mestre/aprendiz”, reciclar-se-ão pressupostos que estiveram na origem da missão universitária ocidental e que a (pós-)modernidade, quantitativamente empreendedora e empresarial (ensino enquanto produto, aluno enquanto cliente), terá feito extinguir.

Após a realização de um proto-laboratório em Bucareste em Julho de 2015, em colaboração com o projeto E-motional | rethinking dance, ODD Gallery e Modulab, o Ano Um (2016/17) arrancou oficialmente em Outubro de 2016 na School of Arts, Design & Architecture da Aalto University (Finlândia), num diálogo simbiótico com o programa Visual Culture & Contemporary Art (ViCCA). Até ao final de Junho de 2018, realizar-se-á uma série de lectures, workshops, think tanks e publicações alusivas à NON-ART, temática estruturante para o Ano Dois.

UNIVERSITY | YLIOPISTO is a durational meta-project for a virtual, trans-national and trans-artistic multiversity. A school where we can learn how to annul Art by the means of art itself. A laboratory to test Pop as the ultimate cultural appropriation. A masterclass titled "Laziness as the new avantgarde". An intensive workshop about Kopimism. A cooltural magazine. And a very demagogic, finlandized and prophyl(arctic) political party.

“(...) in a very literal sense, Kantian university is a fictional institution. Reason can only be institutionalized as far as institution itself can remain a fiction, if it can only work ‘as if’ it was not an institution. When the institution becomes real, reason turns away.” [Bill Readings, The University In Ruins, Harvard, p. 68]

The project “University/Yliopisto” proposes the building of a collaborative platform for inter-disciplinary thinking throughout 5 “school” years, thus operating, both virtually and physically, between two European “extremes”: Portugal and Finland. Fluid and nomadic work groups will meet in temporary spaces driven by one major goal: to elaborate a hybrid model for artistic learning based on “non-artistic” methodologies, or how can one reach Art without being through art? A self-referential academy that offers one program only — the “academic studies” program —, structured in a rhyzomatic and taxonomical dialogue between all Arts and all Sciences, within a discursive system that is non-hierarchical and post-capitalist. For that purpose, new educational paradigms will be tested, new modes of subjectivation and share of knowledge will be experimented, new ethical (therefore, aesthetic) models for the relation “master/apprentice” will be foreseen. Ultimately, some of the premises that originated the mission behind Western university will be recycled, those same premises that (post-) modernity, quantitatively entrepeneur and business-oriented (education as a product, student as a client), has been extinguishing for the last two decades.

After the proto-laboratory that took place in Bucharest (Romania) in July 2015, in a partnership with E-motional | rethinking dance, ODD Gallery and Modulab, the Year One (2016/17) was officially launched in October at Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design & Architecture (Finland), in a symbiotic dialogue with the program Visual Culture and Contemporary Art (ViCCA). Until the end of June 2018, a series of lectures, workshops, think tanks and publications will be launched, all around the subject of NON-ART, the structuring core-theme for Year Two.

[CURADORIA 2017] BALLET // CONTEMPORÂNEO // NORTE

O título Ballet // Contemporâneo // Norte propõe a decomposição das palavras que compõem o nome da companhia, palavras que irão ganhar novos sentidos na sua relação com esta produção. BALLET surge como provocação para um olhar sobre duas coreógrafas que têm investigado novas formas de abordar práticas físicas, técnicas, metodologias, gramáticas e linguagens coreográficas. Também como uma provocação de uma revisitação de dramaturgias formalistas que investem na arquitectura de uma linguagem mais do que numa lógica de “conteúdo” muito marcada em Portugal pelo peso do Dance-Theatre. CONTEMPORÂNEO constitui-se como pergunta ou provocação a uma ideia essencialista de uma história da dança cronicamente escrita a partir de um Ocidente central: normativo, branco e masculino. Existe uma contemporaneidade absoluta? Ou deveríamos antes perspectivar contemporaneidades relativas e simultâneas, que coexistem e dialogam a partir de múltiplas vozes? Num programa que também existe em diálogo com o contexto de Estocolmo, onde vivo e onde tomei contacto com as práticas destas duas coreógrafas, a palavra NORTE surge aqui na sua relatividade geográfica — Santa Maria da Feira está no Norte de Portugal, e Portugal está no Sul da Europa —, expondo uma provocação evidente: como é que uma palavra aparentemente objectiva tem afinal outros significados quando olhada de uma outra perspectiva. O nome que proponho para este programa propõe, assim, uma reflexão sobre uma companhia e o seu nome enquanto objecto que se reinventa ao longo do tempo, e que ganha diferentes significados quando olhado por diferentes perspectivas, passando pela mão de diversos curadores, coreógrafos e bailarinos, etc.

The title Ballet // Contemporâneo // Norte proposes the decomposition of the words that make up the company's name, words that will gain new meanings in its relation with this production. BALLET arises as a provocation to a look at two choreographers who have investigated new ways of approaching choreographic practices, techniques, methodologies, grammars and languages. Also as a provocation of a revisitation of formalist dramaturgies that invest in the architecture of a language more than a logic of "content" very marked in Portugal by the weight of Dance-Theater. CONTEMPORÂNEO comes as a question or provocation to an essentialist idea of ​​a chronically written dance History chronically written from a central West: normative, white, and masculine. Is there an absolute contemporaneity? Or should we rather look at relative and simultaneous contemporaries that coexist and dialogue from multiple voices? In a program that also exists in dialogue with the context of Stockholm, where I live and where I came into contact with the practices of these two choreographers, the word NORTE appears here in its geographical relativity - Santa Maria da Feira is in the North of Portugal, but Portugal is in the Southern Europe -, exposing an obvious provocation: how does a seemingly objective word has, after all, other meanings when read from another perspective. The name I gave to this program proposes then a reflection on a company and its name as an object that reinvents itself over time, and that gains different meanings when viewed from different perspectives, through the hand of several curators, choreographers, dancers, etc.

"Assim como um devaneio, Merops paira entre três tempos. A base no presente são as atividades pelas quais no encontramos diariamente sob a forma de uma companhia de dança, este encontro que forma aquilo que a companhia é, e naquilo em que a companhia se está a transformar. A partir daí, a peça estende-se em duas direções: uma é a ativação da história recém-construída do que a companhia tem sido, uma ficção e uma narração, até certo ponto uma autobiografia por um escritor fantasma. O outro toma como ponto de partida essa mesma história, misturando o funcional com o que é inerentemente ausente de função, num movimento bi-direcional possivelmente corrupto. Ao materializar e executar os devaneios sonhados colectivamente, a peça equilibra-se no limiar daquele momento em que o imaginado quase acontece".

"Just like a daydream Merops hovers between three times. The basis in the present is the daily activities of coming together in the form of a dance company, the coming together forming what the company is, and what the company is forming the coming together. From there the piece extends in two directions. One is the activation of the freshly made history of what the company has been, a fictionalization and a narration, a to some extent ghost-written autobiography. The other takes as it's starting point that very history, mixing the purposeful with the inherently purposeless in a possibly bi-directional corruptive move. By materializing and executing formerly collectively produced daydreams the piece is balancing on the verge to that moment when imagined come to pass."

Uma sombra circular com três pontos

Atos verbais de descrição celebram sombras próximas de nós, visíveis como são (e foram) no momento e em movimento. Um processo migratório de observar, nomear, mostrar, em parceria com outros, extrai gestos que reencaminham e  recentram as nossas trajetórias naturais de atenção. Esta é uma experiência que aplica liberdades associativas de acumular, justapor e organizar possibilidades de metáfora. Aglomerados de nervos narrativos aparecem e desaparecem enquanto o material de memória regista o seu rastro. Alternando entre tocar à tangente, mostrando nalgum lugar, e apontando para além do fim de si mesmo. O que nos é próximo pode novamente ser estranho, múltiplo e desconhecido, digno de investigação e, finalmente, de delicadeza.

A round shadow with three points

Verbal acts of description praise shadows close to us, visible as they are (and were) in the moment and in movement. A migratory process of viewing, naming, showing, in partnership with others, extracts gestures that re-route and re-center our natural trajectories of attention. This is an experiment in applying associative liberties of accumulation, juxtaposition and the organizing possibilities of metaphor. Clusters of narrative nerves appear and disappear as the material of memory traces. Alternating between touching sideways, showing somewhere, and pointing to more than the end of itself. What's close at hand can once again be strange, multiple and unfamiliar, worthy of examination and ultimately kindness.
