BARCO Dance Collection é um projecto onde eu, Dinis Machado, convido outros coreógrafos a criarem solos curtos (10 a 15 min) para eu dançar.

BARCO é uma colecção de danças mais do que um conjunto de espectáculos de dança (no sentido interdisciplinar de uma performance de palco onde luz, som e cenografia e dança constroem uma dramaturgia em conjunto).  A proposta para os coreógrafos convidados é a de pensar o corpo do bailarino como o espaço onde a coreografia acontece mais do que a sala onde nos encontramos. Esta é uma colecção de danças onde a dança é olhada e trabalhada como disciplina autónoma. 
O projecto encontra uma audiencia em noites onde um grupo de danças são mostradas em conjunto. Maioritariamente são apresentadas em outros espaços que não palcos. As danças de BARCO são desenhadas para serem apresentadas em qualquer lugar. Send a condição da dança eminentemente imaterial, enquanto mapa, esta colecção é também uma colecção de práticas mais do que dos objectos que a rodeiam.

BARCO Dance Collection is a project were I, Dinis Machado, invite other choreographers, to choreograph a short solo (10 to 15 min) for myself as a dancer.

It is a collection of dances rather then a collection of dance performances (in the interdisciplinary sense of a stage performance where the light, the sound, the set and the costumes build something together). The proposal for the choreographers is to think that the space were this dances happen is not the room where we are in but within the body itself. This is a collection of dances where dance is looked and worked on as something autonomous.
The project arrives to a public through evenings where a group of dances are shown together. They will mostly not be shown on stages but in other varied types of spaces. Barco is therefore designed to be presented anywhere. Being the performative condition of dance practice mostly immaterial, as a map, this collection is as well a gathering of practices rather then the objects that surround it.

Em “Paradigma”, criamos um folklore DIY para corpos com identidades esbatidas, através de artefactos, narrativas, danças, rituais e músicas. Paradigma é uma dança de um exotismo de lado nenhum. Um reclamar ritualista de diferença e cidadania. Uma paisagem criada de um cadavre esquis de referências paradoxais vindas de lugares faccionais. Uma cerimónia vinda de um tempo antes da divisão entre arquiteto e construtor onde se produzem símbolos abstratos com materiais complexos e uma engenharia caseira.

A ritual is a sequence of activities involving gestures, words, and objects, performed in a sequestered place, and performed according to set sequence.

In Paradigm, we work on a DIY folklore for bodies with blurry identities, created through fctional artifacts, narratives, dances, rituals and songs.
Paradigm is a dance of an exoticism from nowhere. A ritual claim for diference and citizenship. A landscape created from a cadavre exquis of paradoxical references coming from the places where we were born, the places where we live, places we have never been, and most of all, from fctional places. All of them glued together with daily practice. The body, as a mechanical piece of a bigger organic body - the stage itself. This body engages in a ceremony with consequences that are never direct or evident, but it is also a fgure of labor coming from a time before the division between the architect and the bricklayer. A working body producing abstract symbols with concrete materials and a complex homemade engineering.
A body that through this practice enters a process of abstraction, attempting to escape its own anthropomorphism.
To be a human, as to be the theatrical building, disengaged of the pursuit of a (cultural) essence.

MULTIVERSITY — prototype (interactive think tank)

com Rogério Nuno Costa em colaboração com o Medial Lab (Aalto University) para o programa “In-Between. Extensions In Artistic Practice”, dirigido por Petteri Nisunen.

UNIVERSIDADE | YLIOPISTO é um projeto duracional para a criação de uma universidade virtual, trans-nacional e trans-artística. Uma escola para ensinar a anular a arte através da Arte (ou vice-versa). Um laboratório de experiências Pop. Uma masterclass intitulada "A preguiça como novo avant-garde". Um workshop intensivo de Kopimismo. Um magazine cooltural. E um partido político demagógico, finlandizado e profil(árctico) a financiar o empreendimento.

O projeto propõe a construção de uma plataforma colaborativa de pensamento interdisciplinar ao longo de 5 anos “letivos”, operando, virtual e fisicamente, entre dois extremos da Europa: Portugal e Finlândia. Grupos de trabalho fluidos (e nómadas) encontrar-se-ão em espaços temporários com o objetivo de elaborar uma proposta híbrida de ensino artístico alicerçado em metodologias “não-artísticas”: como chegar à Arte sem ser através da arte? Uma universidade meta-referencial que oferece um só programa — o dos “estudos universitários” —, num diálogo rizomático e taxonómico entre todas as Artes e todas as Ciências, e num sistema discursivo não-hierárquico e pós-capitalista. Para tal, ensaiar-se-ão novos paradigmas educacionais, experimentar-se-ão novos modos de subjetivação e de partilha de conhecimento, antever-se-ão novos modelos éticos (logo, estéticos) na relação “mestre/aprendiz”, reciclar-se-ão pressupostos que estiveram na origem da missão universitária ocidental e que a (pós-)modernidade, quantitativamente empreendedora e empresarial (ensino enquanto produto, aluno enquanto cliente), terá feito extinguir.
Após a realização de um proto-laboratório em Bucareste em Julho de 2015, em colaboração com o projeto E-motional | rethinking dance, ODD Gallery e Modulab, o Ano Um (2016/17) arrancou oficialmente em Outubro de 2016 na School of Art Design and Architecture da Aalto University (Helsínquia), num diálogo simbiótico com o programa Visual Culture and Contemporary Art (ViCCA). Até Junho de 2017, realizar-se-á uma série de lectures, workshops, think tanks e publicações alusivas à PETABYTE AGE, temática estruturante para o Ano Um.

UNIVERSITY | YLIOPISTO is a durational meta-project for a virtual, trans-national and trans-artistic multiversity. A school where we can learn how to annul Art by the means of art itself. A laboratory to test Pop as the ultimate cultural appropriation. A masterclass titled "Laziness as the new avantgarde". An intensive workshop about Kopimism. A cooltural magazine. And a very demagogic, finlandized and prophyl(arctic) political party.

The project proposes the building of a collaborative platform for inter-disciplinary thinking throughout 5 “school” years, thus operating, both virtually and physically, between two European “extremes”: Portugal and Finland. Fluid and nomadic work groups will meet in temporary spaces driven by one major goal: to elaborate a hybrid model for artistic learning based on “non-artistic” methodologies, or how can one reach Art without being through art? A self-referential academy that offers one program only — the “academic studies” program —, structured in a rhyzomatic and taxonomical dialogue between all Arts and all Sciences, within a discursive system that is non-hierarchical and post-capitalist. For that purpose, new educational paradigms will be tested, new modes of subjectivation and share of knowledge will be experimented, new ethical (therefore, aesthetic) models for the relation “master/apprentice” will be foreseen. Ultimately, some of the premises that originated the mission behind Western university will be recycled, those same premises that (post-) modernity, quantitatively entrepeneur and business-oriented (education as a product, student as a client), has been extinguishing for the last two decades.

After the proto-laboratory that took place in Bucharest (Romania) in July 2015, in a partnership with E-motional | rethinking dance, ODD Gallery and Modulab, the Year One (2016/17) was officially launched in October at Aalto University’s School of Art, Design and Architecture (Helsinki, Finland), in a symbiotic dialogue with Visual Culture and Contemporary Art (ViCCA) program. Until June 2017, a series of lectures, workshops, think tanks and publications will be launched, all around the subject of PETABYTE AGE, the structuring core-theme for Year One.

A trilogia Vou A Tua Casa estreou em Lisboa no Verão de 2003 e transformou-se imediatamente na “imagem de marca”, mais ou menos estruturante, mais ou menos destrutiva, do seu autor. A performance acontecia nas casas dos próprios espectadores e foi sendo apresentada até sensivelmente Março de 2004. Até 2007, passou por Torres Vedras (Festival A8, Transforma), Londres (Postscript Festival), Covilhã (Quarta Parede), Braga (Censura Prévia), Caldas da Rainha (Festival Sonda), Porto (A Sala) e Hamburgo (Dance Kiosk Festival). A segunda parte da trilogia, sub-intitulada No Caminho, estreou em Torres Vedras (Festival A8) no final de 2004, tendo seguido para Lisboa no ano seguinte; a performance acontecia para um só espectador, em espaços públicos escolhidos por este, e sem duração definida. A terceira e última parte da trilogia — Lado C — regressava ao espaço privado, mais concretamente à casa do criador, que convidava os espectadores para um jantar cozinhado pelo próprio e uma síntese antológica de todo o projecto, feita em conjunto com o público e convidados especiais. Estreou em Lisboa no Festival Alkantara em 2006, tendo sido posteriormente apresentada em casas particulares de Évora (Festival Internacional de Dança Contemporânea “Habitar A Cidade”), Porto (LUPA Festival) e Amares (Encontrarte Festival). A experiência gastronómica de Lado C terá sido depois desenvolvida num projecto autónomo — Vou À Tua Mesa (2010/2011) — onde a comida deixa de ser um mero pretexto para um encontro para passar a elemento definidor de uma série de intervenções artístico-culinárias. A trilogia encontra-se compilada num catálogo e num documentário em vídeo intitulados Projecto de Documentação (2007), disponível online em www.vouatuacasa.wordpress.com.

Pela primeira desde o encerramento do projecto em 2007, a trilogia completa será apresentada ao longo dos meses de Fevereiro e Março de 2017, em diálogo com o programa Visual Culture & Contemporary Art da Aalto University School of Arts Design and Architecture (Espoo e Helsínquia, Finlândia).

“Até que ponto consegue Rogério Nuno Costa, com esta criação ainda em evolução, encetar uma estratégia de subversão dos modelos convencionais de representação? Possivelmente, só o desenrolar do projecto o dirá com propriedade. Mas, para entrar na banalidade das definições – e sem que seja preciso abordar detalhes do conteúdo do espectáculo (...), diria por ora que a acepção de teatro como ‘acto da vontade’ (Brook) é levado ao extremo por Rogério Nuno Costa como pretexto para a consagração do mínimo denominador comum: uma artificialidade construída e um espectador. Ou seja, um espaço comum, um querer ver e um querer ser visto.”

 Vou A Tua Casa [literal translation: I Go To Your House; official English title: Going To Your Place] is a theatre/performance trilogy that ran from 2003 to 2007. The first part of the trilogy [also known as A-Side], happened in the spectators’ own houses (for up to 10 spectators per house). It premiered in Lisbon in the Summer of 2003, having been presented in Torres Vedras (Festival A8, Transforma), London (Postscript Festival), Covilhã (Quarta Parede), Braga (Censura Prévia), Caldas da Rainha (Festival Sonda), Porto (A Sala) and Hamburg (Dance Kiosk Festival). The second part, sub-titled No Caminho [“On The Way”, or B-Side] was a one-to-one encounter between Rogério Nuno Costa and a spectator, who had to choose the public place for the performance to happen beforehand. The durational performance premiered in Torres Vedras (Festival A8) by the end of 2004, having been presented in Lisbon throughout 2005. The last one, sub-titled “Lado C” [C-Side] happened in Rogério Nuno Costa’s own flat, for a group of 6 spectators, 1 specialised observer, 1 invited artist and 1 kitchen assistant. An anthological synthesis of the whole project co-created with the the audience over a dinner cooked by Rogério Nuno Costa, the performance premiered in Lisbon (Festival Alkantara, 2006), having been later replicated in private homes in the cities of Évora (Festival Internacional de Dança Contemporânea), Porto (LUPA Festival) and Amares (Encontrarte Festival). Following the end of the performance works, the trilogy proceeded to its documental phase. DOCUMENTATION PROJECT (2006/07) is a cross-disciplinary editorial project aimed to compile a set of documental materials produced and collected during the public presentations of Vou A Tua Casa in a book and a video documentary. More than a speculation around the residues left by a particularly fragile group of performances, the project is built upon the documentary practice itself, hence operating critically in such concepts as ephemerality, memory, intimacy, site-specificity and autobiographical discourse. For the first time since the end of the project in 2007, the complete trilogy is going to be reset in a dialogue with the program Visual Culture & Contemporary Art at Aalto University School of Arts Design and Architecture (Espoo and Helsinki, Finland), during the months of February and March 2017. 


“How does Rogério Nuno Costa achieves, with this performance, a strategy of subversion upon the conventional patterns of representation? Just to get into the triviality of definitions (there’s no need to relate to details of the performance content), I would say that this sense of theatre as an “act of will” (Peter Brook) is taken to its limits by Rogério Nuno Costa, as a pretext for the consecration of this minimum common denominator: a constructed artificiality and a spectator. In other words, a common space, a will to see and a will to be seen.”
